History. The textile and carpet branches of Tajikistan have ancient traditions dating back to the period of the Great Silk Way. During the 1960s and 1970s the country organized a manufacturing cycle that: produced raw materials, spun, and manufactured fabrics, clothing and carpet products. These products played a significant role in the former USSR's economy. For example, Tajikistan produced 12 % of all carpets used in the former USSR. Currently, this sector has modern spinning, weaving, and knitting factories. It also has enterprises that tailor, make footwear and other small wares. Furthermore, foreign investment has aided in the reconstruction and upgrading of enterprises. These developments have allowed for the production of competitive goods that are exported to the world market. |
