History. Tajikistan's chemical industry also began in the 1960s-1970s within the framework of the Southern-Tajik territorial-production complex program. The industry uses local chemical materials, local power resources and cheap labor. The branch contains large enterprises such as the JV Tajik Nitrogen; this was the country's first chemical industry enterprise. The enterprise was constructed in 1967, and it is now undergoing upgrades that are aided by Chinese investment. Some of the other large enterprises are: the Yavan electrochemical factory, the Zarya Vostoka plant in Taboshar, the Chemical plant of Isfara, the hydrometallurgical plant of Isfara, and the Nilufar varnish-and-paint factory.
